Overcoming the Burden  

Nothing worthwhile comes about by accident. You must be intentional to get where you want to be. I was frustrated by living in a messy house. Recently, my husband and I were preparing for a short trip to attend a conference. We really needed a vacation, and were brainstorming on ways we could make this conference feel a bit more like a vacation. 

My husband commented that the main reason he likes to go on vacation is the calming effect of staying in a clean and uncluttered hotel room. He was simply sharing one of the benefits of vacation. He wasn’t even aware of the impact those words had on me. I instantly became offended. We often spend Saturdays doing nothing but cleaning and organizing this place. I felt overwhelmed. Why doesn’t our place feel like a place of rest?  Why does it feel like the walls are constantly closing in?   

Sometimes you must be sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. Sometimes you must get a little angry to do something different. I decided, as soon as we got back from this working vacation, we were no longer going to allow our messy house to rule over us. It was time to make a change.  

The Purge  

I’m not a hoarder, but when you have a large family, in a modest, three-bedroom house, items can quickly accumulate at takeover. I scheduled a family meeting. I intended to discuss the matter and work as a team to dream up a solution to de-clutter our home. The moment we sat down, I lost my desire for consensus building, and I dictated the plan. I told the family we needed a reset, and they all needed to prepare to part ways with items they didn’t need. I went online, rented a dumpster with next day delivery, and over the next seven days, we purged. Anything we could donate, we donated. Anything we could recycle, we recycled. And finally, anything that needed to be trashed, we trashed. This was the single most important home improvement step I ever made. I’d like to say we went from maximalism to minimalism, but we went from maximalism to near minimalism. I was the encourager-in-chief. I even bribed the kiddos with ice cream one evening. Finally, without the excess clutter, I could see a path forward.

Every family member was responsible for a top-down cleaning of each of their spaces. I took the remaining spaces and assigned them as team tasks. It took another week of diligent work, but we did it. We eliminated the clutter and cleaned the entire house. It was AMAZING!   

Next – family meeting. We had another meeting and relished our success. It was great. We found a couple jobs that needed to be completed. Now we could see some walls that desperately needed some paint. The floor in our hallway needed some work. We decided to tackle those with our newfound momentum.  

The Schedule  

How can we keep it. This was the question of the day. It was great, but we know, it rarely lasts. We decided to commit to the thing we always discuss. We decided to commit to a cleaning schedule. We listed every maintenance cleaning task for the entire home. We decided how many times per week or month each task was necessary. We all committed to each contributing 30 minutes per day with one hour each Saturday and Sunday, and we created a workable schedule.
